So, why “I call you Friend?”

Well, out of all the potential ways in which one can know God, Friend is certainly the most appealing to me. I mean, the alternatives, are servant, subject, and son. Now, out of those three, son is probably the most wonderful, and I guess it is the position one can now have in Christ. However, a son of God does not necessarily mean a friend of God. Sons can be rebellious and still stay sons, (look at the parable of the lost son). I think that maturity brings friendship with God.

Think about it. When I was young I was my father’s son. Now that I’m grown up, I am still my father’s son, but I can also be his friend. Being my father’s friend means that my relationship with him is far more active and alive than if I’m just a son. It means that we like the same things. It means, we like to spend time together. It means we do life together. We share our hearts, we speak into each others lives, we support each other, we not only love each other, we actually like each other. It means that I choose to position my life in such a way that allows me to be close to him. It means that I choose to befriend him.

It means that I, as an example, choose to run the family farm with him, rather than move away and go do my own thing. Now there is nothing wrong with doing my own thing, but I cannot be friends with my father really, if I am building a life separate from him.

So I guess I want to consider what it mean to be friends with God. How would I look at my life, if I knew that He actually wanted to be friends with me? What decisions would I make if being friends with Him was important to me?

It seems that the invitation is there. The question is, “Will I accept it?” And then, “How do I accept it and live it out?”

This blog seeks to consider that question radically. It seeks to understand what it really means. It hopes to gain some clarity on Who exactly is making this invitation and why. And then from there gain Holy Spirit-filled revelation and wisdom  on how to live a life of Friendship with God.

[Lives to consider: the life of Noah, the life of Enoch, the life of Abraham, the life of Moses, the life of David, the life of Jesus.]

Yes indeed He does. He longs to have family but also to enjoy friendship with man. Daily relationship. Sharing life together. Remember, we are made in His likeness. So if we desire friendship and companionship, how much more the one who made us? And he does it in the way you mentioned, from within us. He is our indwelling Lord and friend. We can fellowship with him day or night. Oh, how wonderful. He is the life-giving Spirit. He is the source of life. And He is in us and with us for ever!
